A tragic train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel critical opposition regarding the rapidity and handling of the country's major infrastructure initiatives.
The accident occurred on the trans-isthmus railway, a line developed to connect the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was designed to establish an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, intended to promote commercial progress in the area.
“We shall thoroughly investigate the cause of this accident,” affirmed the country's president.
The official announced that, of the around 250 passengers on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in grave condition. The president stated plans to travel to Oaxaca to meet those involved.
